01 · Environment

Climate Adaptability & Environmental Management

Solid timber contains microscopic moisture networks that expand and contract depending on ambient humidity and temperature changes.

  • The Regional Climate Shift Effect: Moving solid wood furniture between drastically different microclimates can cause rapid structural stress. For example, moving a piece from the high humidity of coastal KwaZulu-Natal to the extreme, dry winter conditions of inland regions like Gauteng accelerates natural timber movement.
  • Direct Exposure Vulnerabilities: Placing your furniture directly in front of large, unshielded windows exposes it to harsh midday ultraviolet (UV) radiation, which fades finishes and dries out timber fibres. Similarly, placing solid wood adjacent to air conditioning vents, underfloor heating pads, or roaring fireplaces causes uneven moisture loss.
Warranty Directive: Structural cracks, severe warping, or joint separation caused by placing timber furniture in environments with rapid humidity fluctuations, close proximity to artificial heat sources, or prolonged exposure to direct sunlight are classified as environmental damage and are completely excluded from warranty coverage.

02 · Everyday care

Daily Cleaning Protocols & Chemical Restrictions

Proper everyday surface management prevents the deterioration of protective oils, waxes, and topcoats.

Dusting & Debris Removal Use a clean, dry, ultra-soft microfiber cloth to wipe down surfaces following the natural direction of the wood grain. Never use rough scrubbing pads, wire brushes, or coarse textiles that micro-scratch the finish.
Spill Cleanup Immediately blot (do not rub) liquid pools with a highly absorbent paper towel or clean cotton rag. Never allow liquid spills to pool or remain standing on the timber surface over time.
Surface Decontamination Wipe with a slightly damp cloth wrung out in warm, pure water, immediately followed by a dry cloth. Do not use ammonia-based cleaners, bleach, aerosol furniture sprays, or silicone-infused polishes.

  • Thermal Protective Barriers: Never place hot coffee mugs, boiling kettles, sizzling pots, or heated serving dishes directly onto raw or sealed timber surfaces. Always use robust, heat-resistant coasters, felt pads, or placemats.
  • Moisture Rings & Condensation: Chilled drink bottles, condensation-heavy glassware, and damp flower vases can leach moisture into the wood’s microscopic pores, creating stubborn white rings. Always utilise water-impermeable coasters.
  • Chemical & Synthetic Risks: Avoid letting household items like alcohol, acetone-based nail polish removers, perfumes, or synthetic plasticizer mats sit directly on the wood, as they can chemically dissolve protective clear coats.

04 · Long-term maintenance

Periodic Deep Nourishment & Maintenance Routines

Depending on whether your custom piece features an oiled, waxed, or sealed finish, periodic re-nourishment is required to keep the timber supple and prevent deep structural drying.

  • Wax Re-application Window: For pieces featuring traditional natural wax finishes, apply a thin layer of premium, clear, natural beeswax every 3 to 6 months. Apply the wax smoothly along the grain line, allow it to set for 15 minutes, and buff it cleanly with a soft cotton cloth.
  • Hardware Inspections: Handcrafted furniture expands subtly over changing seasons. Every six months, inspect the structural bolts, leg mountings, and drawer runners of heavy dining tables, beds, and cabinets, tightening them slightly where necessary to prevent unnecessary mechanical strain.

05 · Warranty alignment

Final Warranty Alignment Declaration

By accepting delivery of your Melonwoods furniture, you acknowledge that minor natural anomalies—such as dimensional variances up to 20mm, subtle surface hair-cracks, rustic knot holes, and natural grain colour gradients—are desirable, artisanal characteristics of solid wood, not manufacturing failures.

Melonwoods guarantees the underlying structural stability of our items for a period of six (6) months from the date of cleared invoice delivery, provided that any claim is supported by a valid tax invoice. If structural failure occurs due to verified manufacturing anomalies, Melonwoods will execute repairs or replacements. However, if our evaluation reveals that structural splits or warping occurred because the wood care instructions outlined in this guide were neglected, the claim will be rejected.
